In less than a century, the University of Alberta has grown to be one of Canada’s foremost research-intensive universities- in the last decade alone, the school's annual research funding has more than tripled. It is located in Edmonton, the vibrant, cosmopolitan capital of the province of Alberta with a metropolitan area of close to 1 million people. According to Maclean's Guide to Canadian Universities 2009, the University of Alberta has earned "considerable bragging rights." Thirty faculty members have won national 3M Teaching Fellowships- the highest number in Canada. Alberta students rank 2nd for winning Academic All-Canadian awards, which are given to those who excel in varsity sports and academics.
